Senior Congress Leader Biren Singh Engti Passes Away at 90

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Biren Singh Engti passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 90. He breathed his last at around 7.46 a.m. at Health City Hospital in Guwahati, where he had been undergoing treatment. A prominent political leader from Diphu, Engti represented the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency seven times and was regarded as one of the most influential voices from the hill districts of Assam. During his long political career, he also served as a Union Minister of State in the Government of India. According to family sources, Engti had fallen unconscious at his residence in Diphu on Monday after reportedly suffering a pressure-related health complication. He was immediately taken to Guwahati for medical treatment but the doctors could not save him. Engti was widely respected for his decades-long political career and his efforts to represent the interests of people from the hill areas of Assam. A senior leader of the Indian National Congress , he remained closely associated with the party for most of his public life. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Family members said his mortal remains will be brought from Guwahati to his residence in Diphu, where it will be kept for three days to allow people to pay their last respects.
