Bhubaneswar: Speculation is mounting over the possible entry of former IAS officer and Kendrapara daughter Sujata Rout Karthikeyan into the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), with political circles abuzz ahead of the party’s crucial meeting tomorrow. While there has been no official confirmation from either Sujata Rout Karthikeyan or the BJD leadership, discussions surrounding her potential political move have gathered momentum. The possibility has drawn significant attention given her administrative experience, public profile, and roots in Kendrapara district. However, party leaders have remained tight-lipped, adding to the suspense. It is to be noted here that Sujata Rout Karthikeyan is an Odisha cadre IAS of 2000 batch. She has played an important role in administration for more than two decades. She started her career from Maoist infested Sundergarh district. She started a bicycle distribution scheme for women students in Sundergarh. Sujata was the first woman District Magistrate of Cuttack district. She worked as the Secretary of Mission Shakti Department for more than 6 years. She increased the bank loan linkage of women SHG groups. She increased the bank loan linkage from Rs 500 crore to Rs 15,000 crore. Because of her work, more than 70 lakh women of Odisha have become self-reliant. Sujata is a graduate in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College for Women–Delhi University (LSR–DU), Delhi. She has done her Masters in International Politics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). She comes from a middle-class family in Baluria village of Pattamundai block of Kendrapara district. She took voluntary retirement from government service in March 2025.
