Suspension of IAS Officers: Rules and Authorities Explained

As soon as the news of the action on the IAS officer comes out, the question often arises as to who has the authority to suspend an officer and what are the rules for this? Can the state government suspend an IAS officer at its level or does the approval of the Center be required? In fact, there are often many questions related to the process of suspension of IAS officers. However, this process is not easy. It is decided under the All India Services Discipline and Appeal Rules 1969. According to the rules, the government under which the officer is working can issue an order of suspension according to the circumstances. However, there are different provisions in the rules regarding the rights between the center and the state. It is stated that it is necessary to give reasons before suspending. After this, the Cadre Controlling Authority has to be informed. Apart from this, a detailed report of the suspension has to be submitted to the central government within 15 days of the suspension. These rules also say that the state government can suspend any IAS officer for 30 days, but if any officer is working under the same government, then only the central government can extend it.
