Kolkata: Suvendu Adhikari, the new and ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal took oath in the Assembly on Wednesday afternoon from Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in South Kolkata. After taking oath as MLA from Bhabanipur, Adhikari made it clear that he will resign as MLA from Nandigram Assembly constituency in East Midnapore district. He was elected MLA from Bhabanipur as well as from Nandigram in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections. Suvendu Adhikari will resign from the seat. In Bhabanipur, this time Suvendu Adhikari defeated Trinamool Congress candidate and the then Chief Minister by a margin of more than 15,000 votes. In Nandigram, Adhikari defeated Pabitra Kar of Trinamool Congress by more than 9,000 votes. This was the second time Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee. After Adhikari was elected from Nandigram by a margin of about 2,000 votes in 2021, Mamata Banerjee won the by-election from Bhabanipur and became the Chief Minister for the third consecutive term. In 2026, not only did her party suffer a personal defeat, but she also lost to the founder of the Aam Aadmi Party, Humayun Kabir Humayun, twice.
