Tamil Nadu Politics Enters New Era as Vijay's TVK Proves Majority in Assembly Vote

Chennai: A new era has begun in Tamil Nadu politics. Actor-turned-politician Vijay, who was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 10, won the vote of confidence in the Assembly today. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) proved its majority by securing 144 votes during the floor test. The main opposition DMK chose to walk out of the House instead of participating in the voting, which made it extremely easy for Vijay to win the trust vote. And political equations: DMK boycotting the vote in the Assembly reduced the total strength of the House to 174. In such a situation, the magic number to prove the majority was only 87, against which the TVK government got 144 votes. On the other hand, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced to vote against TVK, but it is not yet clear whether all his party MLAs followed the party's diktat.
