Telangana CM Announces Special Session to Reduce Minimum Age for Election Contests

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced on Saturday that a special session of the state assembly would be convened in the first week of August. A resolution would be passed in this session demanding that the minimum age to contest elections to the assembly and parliament be reduced to 21 years. He made this announcement while addressing young protesters who were demanding accountability over the NEET-UG 2026 exam controversy, which led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The CM announced that the assembly resolution would seek to reduce the minimum age to contest elections to both state assemblies and parliament from 25 to 21 years. He argued that youth who can become IAS, IPS and IFS officers at the age of 21 should also be eligible to become MLAs and MPs. Citing the examples of Germany, Great Britain and Singapore, where 18-21 youth of the year can become the country's head, Revanth Reddy questioned why India cannot follow the same path. When the Chief Minister, including Gandhi, insisted that the minimum age to contest elections for both state assemblies and parliament would be reduced from 25 to 21 years. He said that the Chief Minister would insist on the participation of the youth in the leadership of the education ministry in the future.
