Telangana Legislative Assembly Declares Khairatabad Seat Vacant Following MLA Nagendra's Disqualification

The Telangana Legislative Assembly has issued an official gazette notification stating that the Khairatabad Assembly seat has become vacant after the disqualification of the member. This gazette has been issued by the Assembly Secretary. It will now be possible for the Election Commission to hold a by-election in this constituency. The Supreme Court has dismissed Nagendra's petition challenging the order of the Telangana High Court by which he was disqualified on the grounds of the Anti-Defection Law. As a result, the disqualification of the sitting MLA has come into effect from 23 April. The High Court on Tuesday set aside the Speaker's order dismissing the petitions to disqualify Nagendra. The court said that he was disqualified from the date of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when he contested as a Congress candidate while being a BRS MLA. The court also refused to stay its order. With the disqualification of the member of the constituency in the 2024 gazette notification, the seat fell vacant. The MLA from Khairatabad, who had won the 2023 assembly elections on a Congress ticket, and the MLA from Khairatabad, who had joined the Congress in the 2023 assembly elections.
