TMC Councillors Seek Anticipatory Bail Amid Extortion Allegations

TMC councillor Debraj Chakraborty and former MLA Aditi Munshi moved the high court seeking anticipatory bail. They moved the bail plea before a bench of Justice Joy Sengupta on Thursday. According to court sources, the case is likely to be heard on June 8. Police have also questioned Debraj on charges of extortion. The mayoral council of Bidhannagar Municipality has not been seen in the area since the election results were announced. Debraj Chakraborty has long been an influential face in political circles. His active role, especially in youth organisations and the North 24 Parganas organisational circle, has been in the news for a long time. There were allegations of financial irregularities related to appointments and tenders in Bidhannagar Municipality. He was also raided by the ED. On Tuesday, he was reportedly detained at a particular place and taken for questioning. On the other hand, Ranjan Poddar, a TMC councillor from Bidhannagar, a protege of Sujit Bose, was arrested on charges of extortion.
