Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday (19 June 2026) and demanded the disqualification of the 20 rebel MPs of the party. He submitted 20 petitions to Om Birla against these 20 Lok Sabha members and urged him to take steps citing the 10th Schedule of the Constitution and the Supreme Court order. Abhishek Banerjee hoped that Om Birla would work according to the Constitution and not strangulate the Constitution. The 20 MPs who rebelled from the TMC have announced to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) and become part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). After meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Abhishek Banerjee said in the Parliament premises that it is very clear in the 10th Schedule of the Constitution that the merger of one party with another party is not based on the number of the parliamentary party or the legislative party, but it is necessary that the entire party merges. Abhishek Banerjee said, "After meeting the 20 MPs and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, we have come to know that these MPs have joined the NCP as a separate group.
