The battle for control of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) intensified on Tuesday (23 June 2026). Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's camp claimed to have formed a new national working committee two days earlier and sent its information to the Election Commission hours before the rebel faction announced a parallel leadership by removing Mamata Banerjee as party president. Meanwhile, the Mamata Banerjee-led faction suspended her former aide and former Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim from the party along with seven other rebel MLAs. Besides Firhad Hakim, the suspended leaders include Javed Ahmed Khan, Arup Roy, Rathin Ghosh, Biplab Mitra, Sabina Yasmin, Arup Biswas, and Snehasis Chakraborty. The move came hours after the Mamata Banerjee-led faction issued show-cause notices to the rebel members, accusing them of indulging in anti-party activities. Opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee named Roy, a rebel TMC MLA, as the new party president on Monday (22 June 2026).
