Trinamool Congress Suffers Major Setback as 20 MPs Rebel and Seek to Join BJP's NDA Alliance

A political earthquake has occurred in the politics of West Bengal. Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has suffered the biggest setback ever. 20 Lok Sabha MPs of the party have written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla raising the bugle of rebellion and expressing their willingness to join the BJP-led NDA alliance. TMC MP Kakoli Dastidar, who is leading this rebellion, has clearly said on Monday (8 June 2026) that they accept the election results of West Bengal and believe that their political future is more secure with the NDA. But the biggest question now echoing in the corridors of politics is whether these rebel MPs will be able to save their Lok Sabha membership or will lose their membership under the defection law. This rebellion did not happen suddenly. At the same time when Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee were attending the meeting of the opposition India Block in Delhi, a dozen disgruntled MPs of the TMC and the Union Minister in charge of the Bengal elections led by BJP's Sukhdeo Roy Dastidar were meeting at the residence of 16 TMC MPs.
