Trump Signs Executive Orders to Limit Birthright Citizenship and Birth Tourism

US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed two new executive orders on birthright citizenship and birth tourism. According to the White House, these orders will expand the scope of cases where children born in the US should not automatically receive citizenship. At the same time, foreigners coming to the US only for the purpose of making a child an American citizen will also be strictly enforced. Birthright citizenship in the US means that a person born on the soil of the country generally gets American citizenship. This provision is linked to the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. Trump has long been trying to limit this provision. His previous attempt was challenged in court and the administration had to change its strategy after the recent Supreme Court decision. The new orders specifically target situations where the child's parents are not American citizens and their presence in the US is temporary or illegal. The administration argues that these existing arrangements are being used, although the legal order is likely to be challenged by civil rights organizations.
