UGC Introduces Specialization Requirements for Master's Degrees in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

UGC has made changes in the structure of many degree programs related to allied and health care. This new rule will come into effect from the academic session 2026-27. Under this, the degrees of Masters of Physiotherapy and Masters of Occupational Therapy will no longer be given by the common name, but with the fixed specialization. UGC has made this change under the 5th amendment issued in the Gazette of India on 27 August 2026. This amendment has been made in the UGC notification related to degrees issued in 2014. Under this, many new and revised degree programs related to allied and health care education have also been included in the list. From 2026-27, the degree of the students doing MPT will be mentioned in their specialization. UGC has set 8 fields for this. These include Musculoskeletal Sciences, Neurosciences, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Sciences, Sports Sciences, Pediatrics and Neonatology, Gynaecology and Gynecology.
