UK Appoints Indian-Origin MP Kanishka Narayan as First Cabinet-Level AI Minister

The United Kingdom (UK) has appointed Indian-origin MP Kanishka Narayan as the country's first cabinet-level Artificial Intelligence (AI) minister. This is the first time an AI portfolio has been given cabinet status in the UK. Kanishka Narayan, born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, will now oversee the UK's AI strategy under a major reshuffle in the government. Soon after taking office, Narayan reported that his first official meeting as AI minister was with Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind. Reacting to the appointment, Hassabis congratulated Narayan and said that the appointment is good news for the UK's AI ecosystem. Narayan later said that his conversations were focused on transforming Britain's AI leadership into economic growth and employment. Kanishka Narayan was born in Bihar in 1989, after which his family moved to New Delhi. At the age of 12, he moved to Cardiff, Wales, where his parents settled in the UK, and after working at Minimum Politics-Economics (MPE) and Politics-Scolarship (MPE) at Oxford University.
