Under US President Donald Trump, another potential round of tariffs could hit exports to about 60 countries, including India. In fact, the US has begun a three-day hearing on a proposal to impose new import tariffs on these countries due to concerns that they are not doing enough to stop goods made with forced labor from reaching global supply chains. India has objected to the findings of the US Trade Representative (USTR) and has sought an end to the investigation. The investigation began in March 2026 and studied situations where forced labor is used directly in manufacturing. As well as cases where countries fail to curb imports of goods made with forced labor and use them in goods exported to the US. In early June, the US House of Representatives (USTR) placed additional tariffs on imports from India and 59 other countries.
