Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections: Samajwadi Party and Congress Engage in Bitter Dispute Over Seat Allocation

As Uttar Pradesh gears up for the 2027 assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress of the India alliance are engaged in a bitter tussle. In the last week of September 2026, there has been a flood of statements between the leaders of the two parties, raising questions as to whether this alliance is on the verge of breaking up. However, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav says that "there is a fight from above, but we are united from within." The tussle for seats in the SP and Congress for the UP assembly elections is long. The dispute began in July 2026 and worsened in the last week of September 2026. Congress MP Imran Masood said that "Don't make an alliance, who is saying? Are we begging for one?" To this, SP MP Iqra Hassan retorted that "This is a stupid statement, only the BJP can be defeated in UP." SP leader IP Singh took a jibe at the Congress's claims of 150 seats and said that "Akhilesh Gandhi will never fight the so-called Congress alliance in UP's next election on 5th September 2026."
