The appointment of a full-time director general of police (DGP) in Uttar Pradesh has hit a roadblock again, with the Supreme Court directing all states to send proposals for the appointment of a full-time DGP to the Centre. Sources say the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has sent the proposal for the appointment of a full-time DGP back to the government with some objections. However, there is no official confirmation of the proposal being sent back. The state has had acting DGPs for the past four years. Five DGPs have been appointed since 2022, but all have been acting ones. The government's proposal to the UPSC included the names of senior IPS officers from the 1990 batch to the 1996 batch who have completed 30 years of service. The Supreme Court had recently directed all states to send proposals for the appointment of a full-time DGP to the Centre. Sources say the UPSC has asked for the proposal to be sent again in line with the 2025 circular and guidelines. Details of the promotion of officers to the post of DG are also being sought.
