Nagpur: Veteran Vidarbha politician, educationist and social worker and former state minister Datta Meghe died in Nagpur on Sunday (March 22). He was 90 years old. His death has left a huge void in the political, educational and social fields of the state including Vidarbha. Meghe was born on 11 November 1936 in Pavanar, Wardha district. He represented Nagpur, Ramtek and Wardha constituencies as a four-time Lok Sabha MP, serving in Congress, NCP as well as BJP during his long political career. He also served as a Rajya Sabha member and served as a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council. Apart from politics, he did remarkable work in the field of education and health. He brought education and health facilities to rural areas through Nagar Yuvak Shikshan Sanstha as well as through the establishment of institutions like Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Science. His work gave opportunities to thousands of students from Vidarbha. Meghe was also known as a supporter of the demand for Vidarbha statehood. His son Sameer Meghe is also active in politics for the next generation of his family.
