The controversy over the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly has reached the Calcutta High Court. The High Court has asked Speaker Rathindra Bose several questions regarding the appointment of Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. Whether the Speaker can ignore the proposal of the majority party and can he appoint the Leader of the Opposition without hearing both sides. Two names were received by the Speaker from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), one was sent by the rebel MLAs of the party, while the other was sent by the party leadership. The Calcutta High Court has questioned what procedure the Speaker should follow if the Leader of the Opposition receives two different proposals from the same political party. This is the first time such a dispute has come before the court in the West Bengal Assembly. Speaker Rathindra Basu accepted the proposal sent by the rebel group Ritabrata Banerjee, which has been challenged in the Calcutta High Court. The name of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay was sent by the faction of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. Now, Shobhan Chattopadhyay has filed a petition in the High Court.
