West Bengal politics is witnessing a huge upheaval. After the change of power in the state, the BJP government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is continuously taking tough and shocking decisions. In this series, in a major step through the assembly on Monday (29 June 2026), the decisions related to the OBC reservation of the time of Mamata Banerjee and the Left government have been reversed. The Suvendu government has passed the State Backward Classes Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the West Bengal Backward Classes Government Jobs and Posts Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Under this new law, the quota of OBC reservation in Bengal has been reduced from 17 percent to 7 percent directly. Also, many castes have been shown the way out by reorganizing the OBC list, which includes a large population of the Muslim community. To understand this matter, it will take a little back. After the implementation of the Mandal Commission in the country, the then West Bengal government of Jyoti Basu in 1993 had kept 66 castes in the original list of OBCs, and after 10 years, the Bhattacharya government added 42 new OBCs to the list.
