West Bengal Petition Challenges Electoral Roll Deletions Ahead of Elections

Another petition has been filed in connection with West Bengal's SIR and pending hearings. This petition is scheduled to be heard on October 5. The petitioner says that the Election Commission's own data raises questions about the names deleted from the SIR and the voter list. This petition also cites pending appeals, as well as the upcoming by-election and municipal elections in West Bengal. The petition questions whether the 2.2 million people whose appeals are still pending will be able to add their names. The petitioner also cites the press note that states re-enrolling and filling up of Form 6 under the Special Enrolment Campaign in 20 states. The petitioner says that the data indicates that as of August 7, only 7.2 million new enrolments were made in West Bengal. He says 7.6 million applications were rejected under Form 6. Also, it is stated that approximately 2.6 million applications were deleted or pending in the form.
