The big development in West Bengal politics came on Thursday when AJUP founder Humayun Kabir made an open offer to former chief minister Mamata Banerjee to return to the assembly. Kabir, who recently broke away from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and formed his own party, said he could make way for her by vacating the Rejinagar seat if Mamata Banerjee wanted. Humayun Kabir, who won the 2026 assembly elections from Nawada and Rejinagar seats in Murshidabad district, said that Mamata Banerjee's victory from Nandigram may be difficult, but she could easily reach the assembly from Rejinagar. Humayun Kabir, according to news agency PTI, said, "If Mamata Banerjee comes to me, I can send her to the assembly from Rejinagar. If she contests from Nandigram, I will not win. But if she wants, I will ensure her victory by resigning." Humayun Kabir, however, sympathized with Mamata Banerjee, saying that the current political situation hurts him. "Whatever my regional position is, Kabir has reached me today."
