New Delhi: From deploying extra traffic personnel and clearing encroachments to planning subways, foot overbridges and parking facilities, authorities have rolled out a set of measures to ease congestion at 62 recently listed ‘hotspots' across the capital. The hotspots, identified jointly byDelhi Traffic Police(DTP) and corroborated by Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the transport department, are precise points on road stretches where congestion builds up at predictable times. They span some of the city's busiest stretches, ranging from the perennially gridlocked Bhavbhuti Marg outside New Delhi Railway Station to Madhuban Chowk in northwest Delhi, Mayur Vihar Phase III in the east, South Extension in south Delhi, Punjabi Bagh in the west, and key transit hubs such as Kashmere Gate and Anand Vihar.IPL Auction 2026IPL Auction 2026: Full list of sold and unsold players for all teamsIPL 2026 team and squad List: Updated players for all 10 Teams; who got whomThe exercise exposed long-standing structural deficiencies, including narrow carriageways, damaged or missing medians, illegal parking and encroachments, poorly designed junctions, and extended civil works. In some locations, congestion stems from highly localised factors. On Boulevard Road near Tis Hazari, for instance, vehicles belonging to advocates frequently occupy both carriageways and block two DTC bus stops, leading to hours-long traffic snarls on working days.Based on the findings, agencies have now begun implementing immediate on-ground measures. "Additional traffic staff, ranging from five to over 20 personnel, have been deployed at several hotspots, including six at ISBT Kashmere Gate, 29 along Boulevard Road between Tis Hazari and Kashmere Gate metro station during peak hours, 10 at Kondli Bridge, 14 on Vikas Marg, 24 at ISBT Anand Vihar, 20 on Sardar Patel Marg and 12 near Patiala House Court on Purana Quila Road," said additional CP traffic Dinesh Kumar Gupta."We are also following up with other agencies on long-term fixes, while constantly keeping a check on traffic violations."Encroachment removal has, meanwhile, been taken up at over 40 locations, including Bhavbhuti Marg near New Delhi Railway Station, Kamal T-Point, Sadar Bazar, Qutab Road, Anand Vihar, Azadpur Mandi, Madhuban Chowk, Libaspur underpass, South Extension, the stretch outside Max Hospital in Saket, Sarai Kale Khan, Neela Gumbad and the Okhla traffic signal on Mathura Road.Long-term solutions have also been identified at several hotspots. For 14 locations, proposals include the construction of subways, foot overbridges and underpasses. An underpass connecting Pusa Road to Bagga Link Road will be explored over the next two years. Near Hanuman temple, PWD has suggested creating a parking facility or multilevel car park to prevent roadside parking, with a joint survey with traffic police planned within three months. On Boulevard Road, while a committee suggested using an existing Metro subway, DMRC declined to open it at night, prompting PWD to explore the feasibility of constructing a new foot overbridge within three months. Surface parking along Vikas Marg is also under consideration, and in Bawana, an elevated road has been proposed on the affected carriageway with a two-year timeline.More than half of the 62 locations see severe congestion during morning and evening peak hours, the assessment shows.Prominent among these are Safdarjung Hospital, Ajmeri Gate, the road outside Max Saket and the Punjabi Bagh roundabout on Ring Road. At least 10 locations, including Chelmsford Road near New Delhi Railway Station and Purana Quila Road adjacent to Patiala House Court, face intense evening traffic. At least five areas, such as South Extension Part I, Majnu Ka Tila and Mayur Vihar Phase III, are choked on weekends or market days.Officials said the exercise is intended to move beyond temporary fixes and create a coordinated response that combines enforcement, infrastructure upgrades and redesign to ease congestion at some of Delhi's most problematic traffic points.Get an chance to win ₹5000 Amazon Voucher by taking part in India's Biggest Habit Index!
